Inspired by real events around the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III in Rome in 1973, and based on John Pearson’s book Painfully Rich: the Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty, Ridley Scott’s latest film is a tense crime thriller with an unforgettable monster at its heart. Like the heated media scrum around the real kidnapping, the film itself has attracted media furore because of the last-minute re-shooting and re-editing to replace disgraced actor Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in the role of the hard-hearted tycoon. The good news is that Plummer is perfect as the calcified miser who must win at all costs. Spacey would no doubt have created his own brilliant villain (perhaps one day we’ll see that version on a DVD extra), but now it’s hard to imagine anyone bettering Plummer’s Getty. It’s the early 50s, which means it's been a long time since Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C Reilly) were at their Hollywood peak. But Stan - the brains and drive behind the team - has a plan: a series of live performances across the UK to build interest in a film version of Robin Hood with them as the leads. That’s fine with the easy-going Oliver, even though his health isn't exactly at its best. The tour gets off to a shaky start.  Shabby hotels, tiny venues, small crowds: this isn't exactly what either of them signed up for. So they start doing a bit of self-promotion, and it turns out their fanbase isn't quite dead yet. But as sales increase, so does the pressure. Their partnership has some not-so-hidden fault lines from a betrayal (Ollie did a movie without Stan) at the height of their fame; are they even going to reach the end of their final tour?  The story is fine but forgettable; it’s the performances that stand out. Review: Lady Bird

Lets get this out of the way: As the awards season gathers pace, Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut  Lady Bird  is in severe danger of being overhyped. Be warned, it’s the kind of modest, indie coming-of-age story we’ve seen a million times. Set in a vaguely nostalgic 2002 and 2003, it’s episodic and stylistically simple, with a guitar-heavy soundtrack. It hits the familiar beats: Prom Night, painful conflicts with parents and falling outs with best friends; the pursuit of popularity, the loss of virginity and the wisdom that comes when grand dreams crunch up against reality. But  Lady Bird  is written, directed and performed with such tenderness, spiky humour and attention to detail, that it’s a delight to behold. Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is a dramatic and somewhat pretentious 17-year-old who insists on being called by the name ‘Lady Bird’. Review: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Jukebox musicals – you know, where they string together a bunch of popular songs then wrap a paper-thin story around them – make sense on stage: they’re basically a live concert with talking bits. As a movie though, they need a little extra to get them over the line. The first Mamma Mia had star power in the form of Meryl Streep and a bunch of name brand handsome guys; with Streep out the door and all the good ABBA songs used in the first film, why exactly are we coming to the cinemas for this one? It’s been ten years since Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) first asked her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) about her three dads (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard) and got a whole bunch of ABBA songs as a reply. Now her mother is dead – presumably from cancer of the StreepDidntWantToReturn – and in tribute Sophie is about to open a hotel on the Greek island she called home.
